Standardized CO2 Footprint Management

Our Motivation

The key drivers of this use case include growing customer demands for transparency and sustainable products, a push for sustainable product design, and the reduction of corporate CO2 emissions. Our goal is to create an adaptive, comprehensive sustainability assessment that meets new internal and external business reporting requirements—for example, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

The Use Case

In the CO2 Footprint Use Case, we define the data content and formats to be exchanged along the supply chain, from suppliers and medical device manufacturers to end customers. We analyze relevant healthcare industry standards and norms to identify the necessary data points. To implement these findings, the project team is developing a technical infrastructure (demonstrator) that supports cross-company data exchange. We draw on existing open-source components and parallel funding projects in the process.

WHAT:

We standardize the sustainability assessment for medical devices through uniform methodology and joint monitoring.

Who:

From manufacturers to wholesalers to medical practices – everyone contributes with their data points along the supply chain to making sustainability evidence transparent.

WHY:

Standardized management of the ecological footprint ensures transparency and comparability. In this way, we strengthen trust in the data space. Sustainably.

Best Sustainability Rating

Unlike many physical metrics, a product’s CO2 footprint cannot be measured directly by the end customer. To ensure traceability and comparability, we define uniform methodologies throughout the entire value chain. This includes:

  • Determining which product lifecycle processes are factored into the footprint
  • Establishing the level of accuracy for calculating the footprint
  • Identifying which available, widely applicable data sets feed into the calculation

We take a holistic approach to data availability and quality requirements for various stakeholders (e.g., quality management for LCA analyses, engineering for eco-design, and accounting for reporting) to maintain data consistency.

Outlook

In the medium term, the CO2 Footprint Use Case will be expanded to include additional ecological aspects, such as the development of a digital product passport. The data model we create will enable cross-company data exchange within the HealthTrack-X data space.
